Pharmaceutical expenditure in Uzbekistan reached 640 USDmn in 2017. The market is expected to reach $888 million by 2022 with a CAGR of 6.7%, of this the imports are expected to account for over USD 657mn in 2022, growing at a CAGR of 11.5%

The per capita Pharma consumption by 2021 is expected to reach $26.1.

Why is the market growing?

Strong and Sustained market with increasing spending on healthcare. 

Current health expenditure is 6.4%. The government health spending increased from $36 to $85 per person; out of pocket spending almost doubled from $37 to $69 per person, and developmental 
assistance doubled from $3 to $7 per person in the past 30 years from its independence. The increased funding led to higher availability in healthcare, especially in rural areas, and better quality of care.

Cardiovascular & Neuropsychiatric are a major concern. 
5% of the population is estimated to be Diabetic. 

Infectious diseases like parasitic infections, respiratory and T.B. are quite prevalent.
As of 2014, WHO's latest available data reports HIV prevalence at 104 per 100,000 population

At 29 deaths out of 100,000, it ranks 114 in maternal mortality. At 16.3 deaths out of 1,000, it ranks 93 in infant mortality

Preferential Treatment

The leading sources for imported medicines are Russia, Germany, Ukraine, India and Hungary.


Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) countries supply around 28% of the total registered drugs in the country, ahead of ASIAN destinations (23%), but behind that of other European sources (30%). 

US imports account for less than 1%, with domestic producers accountable for the remainder.

Local manufacturing meets less than 15% of the total demand, with almost zero investment on R&D. 

Ease of Doing Business in Uzbekistan is expected to reach 64 by the end of 2020, thus acting as a catalyst for foreign businesses to setup base here.
The State does not permit entry of unregistered pharmaceuticals in the country and the regulation mandates registration of Drugs, Medical Devices, and others
